HOW TO
TAKE A GOOD PICTURE
In photographing Real Estate, the position of the sun relative
to the property can make the difference between a good and a poor photograph.
The standard rule‑of‑thumb should be to photograph the property when the sun is
striking onto the front of the house. This does not mean photographing the
house when the sun is at its zenith of approximately noontime. At noon, the sun
is coming down directly onto the roof of the house and will generally cast
shadows on the front of the house and especially on the porch. The following
guidelines should help you locate the proper time of day for photographing a
property:
1. Houses that face South ‑ photograph anytime
between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. ‑ 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The sun will almost always be striking the front of this
house and during the fall through spring, it is possible to photograph from
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., since the sun's position in the sky is lower to the
southern horizon.
2. Houses that face North ‑ photograph anytime
between 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. ‑ 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 .m.
The sun will never actually strike the front of the house.
Thus, you must shoot early or late in the day when the shadows will be indirect
and softer on the front of the house. Never photograph this house at noontime,
because the light will refract directly into the lens completely washing out
the house.
